CERAMIC HANDBUILDING WORKSHOP IN PORTO, PORTUGAL
THIS WORKSHOP IS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE EVENTS ONLY - ON REQUEST. Please complete the form below to receive a personalised quote.
Create your own matcha or tea mug! Japanese style.
In this 2-hour experience in Porto, you'll create your own Japanese-style mug, designed for matcha or tea, in a shared creative experience surrounded by a calm, inspiring, and creative atmosphere.
Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese ceramic technique that involves carving a cup or bowl from a solid block of clay. By hollowing it out and removing the excess material, each piece develops organic shapes and natural textures, making every mug truly one of a kind.
This technique is rooted in the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which celebrates beauty in imperfection, simplicity, and the handmade. Kurinuki is a very direct, tactile process that requires only clay, a few simple tools, and your hands.
In this workshop, you will create your own special mug, designed according to your personal preference: a wide bowl-style cup for matcha or a taller cup for hot tea.
In Japanese ceramic tradition, the wider, lower vessel typically used for matcha is called a Chawan, while the taller, narrower cup used for tea is known as a Yunomi. You are free to choose the shape and size that best suits how you enjoy your daily drink.
Each participant will create one ceramic piece, experimenting with form and surface texture, and may paint the piece if desired while choosing a glaze for it. After the workshop, your piece will be glazed and fired at high temperature using a selection of durable, food-safe glazes. Once the firing process is complete, participants will be notified to collect their finished piece at a later date.
In this ceramic workshop, you'll learn
- An introduction to ceramics: different types of clays and glazes, firing process, examples of different styles and ways of transforming clay into a ceramic piece.
- To create an organic, expressive piece through hands-on work with clay.
- To work with stoneware clay, very resistant for everyday use.

About Fungi Cerâmica
After many years working in film and photography in Buenos Aires, Francisco Iurcovich sought a calmer profession away from screens and created Fungi Cerâmica.
Focused on crafting everyday pieces, he pursues the beauty of imperfection and the uniqueness of handmade work as an ideology against an industrialized, impersonal world. With influences from both Eastern traditions and his Latin American roots,
Fungi’s daily practice seeks a connection with clay that centers both body and mind. Today, Fungi combines artistic work with the production of pieces for cafés and restaurants, continually experimenting with different techniques, clays, and glazes
